Scouting Trip to New Mexico

April 27 – May 1

Is your church interested in a mission trip close to home?  McCurdy Ministries Community Center is located only 560 miles from Oklahoma City in Espanola, NM.  Founded in 1912, the 106-year-old Methodist ministry works in this Hispanic community to “create hope and empower the lives of children, youth, adults, and families through education, life skills, and faith-based programs.”

Located 25 miles north of Santa Fe, Espanola has a great need for the services McCurdy Ministries provides as more than 29 percent of the families live below the poverty level.  In addition, the community has one of the highest rates of heroin overdoses in the nation.

Every school day, McCurdy Ministries makes a difference for 500+ students through their ministry programs:  Project Cariño (mental health counseling), the charter school breakfast and lunch program, After-School Care, McCurdy Preschool, and Camp Stars.  In addition, McCurdy offers an Adult Education program with classes in GED, literacy, and parenting skills with free childcare provided.

More VIM teams are needed, especially with men who have construction capabilities.  However, there is an opportunity for everyone with a heart to serve as “the hands and feet of Christ”.  A wide variety of work tasks include helping with construction projects, grounds maintenance, cafeteria duty, ministry programs, and office/administrative duties.  There also are some opportunities to work in the counseling program and as a teacher aid in the Charter School.

A Scouting Trip to New Mexico is planned for this spring, departing on April 27 and returning May 1.  The 5-day mission excursion will provide church representatives with an overview of the programs offered by McCurdy Ministries plus a mini-work project that will illustrate the type of the work available to mission teams.

Basic costs for transportation and lodging as well as some meals and tours are being provided by the OKVIM office and Claremore FUMC.  Additional costs for meals and some optional tours are estimated to cost participants about $125.
